As a floor covering, carpet offers a few advantages over hard floors. The biggest one, and perhaps its biggest disadvantage, too, is that it provides a soft surface that’s warm and comfortable to walk on.
Because carpet is so soft and plush, it can be difficult to keep clean. Eventually, your carpet will fall victim to accidents, spills, and whatever that is on the bottom of your shoe. Addressing these stains quickly is the key to keeping the carpet in good shape. Below, we give you several helpful carpet cleaning tips you’ll want to know if you have carpet in your home.
1. Blot Don’t Rub
If someone spills their drink on your carpet, don’t panic. Instead, grab a soft cloth, paper towel, or sponge and begin blotting from the outside of the stain in. Blotting puts just enough pressure on the stain to soak up excess liquid. Never rub or scrub a stain as it will damage the carpet fibers and encourage the stain to imbed deeper.
2. Remove Blood Stains
Blood is one of the most difficult substances to get out of a carpet. If you use hydrogen peroxide to remove it, however, it’ll come right up as if it never existed there at all.
Simply use water and detergent to remove any dried blood. Then, pour hydrogen peroxide directly on the remaining stain. Use a dry cloth to blot the hydrogen peroxide until the stain is gone. Repeat as necessary to remove all traces of blood from your carpet.
3. Deep Clean Your Carpets
Ideally, you’ll want to deep clean your carpets once every 12-18 months. If you have young children or pets, you’ll want to do it more often. You can hire a professional carpet cleaning service or rent a carpet shampooer from your local hardware store and do it yourself.
4. Clean Stains Organically
If you have pets or young children, you may want to clean carpet stains using organic cleaners rather than chemical ones as they are safer for their health and the environment. Organic cleaners contain natural ingredients that don’t leave behind any residue and are safe for the youngest and furriest members of your family.
5. Remove Greasy Stains
If the stain you’re trying to remove is a greasy one, try making a solution of water and a few drops of Dawn® dish soap. Put the mixture in a spray bottle, saturate the stain, and then blot it away using a soft cloth. The dish soap works the same way it does on your dishes to remove grease.
Keeping your carpets looking and smelling great doesn’t have to be hard work if you follow the tips outlined above.
